Then in 2011, when Europe was hit by economic chaos and Greece and Italy were on the verge of total collapse, the European Commission summarily fired the elected prime minsters of both nations and appointed their replacements: Mario Monti was installed as prime minister in Italy and Lukas Papademos assumed the same title in Greece.
