When the firm’s managing partner died in 1926, Foster was given the job. One of his first decisions was to recruit his brother. Allen Dulles was fresh out of law school and had not even been admitted to the bar, but his unusual skills and wide range of contacts made him a great asset to Sullivan & Cromwell, which advertised itself as having “unusual and diversified means of obtaining information.” In effect he was an intelligence officer for hire.
