In the process, Roosevelt gained enough popular support to win the election of 1904 with 70 percent of the electoral vote. But by 1907, either because he believed he needed Morgan’s help to salvage an economic catastrophe or because he wasn’t so different philosophically from Morgan after all, Roosevelt wound up doing Morgan’s bidding.
