On May 7, 1915, a German U-20 torpedoed the starboard side of the British luxury liner Lusitania off the Irish coast. Nearly 1,200 people, including 124 US citizens, were killed. Though the Germans expressed regret for the loss of American lives, it was a reticent regret.
