To deal with this matter, the Fletcher-Rayburn bill, which would become known as the Securities Exchange Act, was introduced on February 10, 1934. It met with an intense and immediate opposition campaign chiefly engineered by Morgan confidant Richard Whitney, now president of the New York Stock Exchange.
