Rentschler succeeded James Perkins at the helm of National City Bank in July 1940 after Perkins died of a heart attack following dinner with US Steel magnate Arthur Anderson. Perkins had run the bank during the Depression in the wake of the scandals of his predecessor, Charles Mitchell.
