  It is significant that when Isaac Casaubon in 1614 pointed out for the first time for twelve centuries (Lactantius to Casaubon is about twelve centuries) that, though there may have been a man called Hermes Trismegistus of hoary antiquity, the Hermetica cannot have been written by any such person, he assumed that the works, or some of them were fakes by Christians.1 So deeply had the Christian interpretation penetrated into the Hermetica that it was thus that they were seen in the first critical approach to them.
