Regnault says that Bruno had given him the manuscript and asked him to edit it for publication. Published in 1582, the same year as the De umbris idearum, it is later than that work which is referred to in the preface as having been dedicated to the Most Christian King.1 It opens with a terrific incantation to the Sun by Circe,2 men- tioning all his names, attributes, animals, birds, metals, and so on.
