Frank Wisner opened The New York Times on November 20, 1946, and read a short article on page ten reporting that his old agent Manacatide, “formerly employed by the United States Mission,” had been sentenced to life imprisonment, “on the grounds that he accompanied a Lieutenant Hamilton of the American Military Mission to a National Peasant congress.” By winter’s end, nearly every one of the Romanians who had worked for Wisner during the war was jailed or killed; his personal secretary had committed suicide.
