This squeamishness dated back at least to the preferred-list disaster of 1929. In 1980, perhaps taking a swipe at IBM, Morgan Stanley introduced rival Apple Computer to the stock market. (It also bought Hitachi computers for the office, something it wouldn’t have done before 1979.) For a long time, the firm had resisted high-tech start-ups.
