In 1986, to raise capital for these new activities and strengthen its position in world capital markets, Morgan Stanley sold 20 percent of its shares to the public. There was a wonderful irony here: it went public so it could take other companies private. To give these shares global distribution, a third of them were sold to buyers outside North America.
