As Rockefeller and Archbold later claimed in 1907 when their subsequent behavior was questioned, “Since the enactment of the interstate commerce law in 1887, the Standard Oil Co. has most carefully observed its provisions and in no case has wilfully violated the law.”35 Rockefeller tended to portray himself as a hard-driving executive who went as far as the law allowed but not an inch further.
