In early 1892 Carl Meyer was sent to the Transvaal to investigate the various gold mines. His report was euphoric. The fields, he declared, had “an enormous future before them”: [T]he country altogether will for the next 10 or 20 years offer greater scope for European capital than South America and similar countries.
