When the Nazis later rewrote this history to suit their needs, the modest, unassuming Fritz was villainized for his “treacherous” part in the Protopopov affair. In 1925, Nazi publicist Theodor Fritsch insisted that Fritz had fumbled a sure chance for a separate peace in 1916.
