In July 1959, Siegmund advised Roy Thomson, the Toronto barber’s son who owned a chain of Canadian newspapers, in his purchase of the Sunday Times. Siegmund, who seldom read newspapers, already had as a client Cecil King, the tabloid press baron of the Daily Mirror, who had been turned down by older, stodgier merchant banks.
