As a classical scholar, Max Adolph shared Aby’s delight in untangling myths and decoding symbols. In 1934, he received a teacher’s diploma from Hamburg University for a Latin paper analyzing the representation of the Goddess Fortuna in the arts and literature—a quintessential Aby Warburg topic. Like his father, too, Max Adolph was a marvelously imaginative lecturer.
