His Job-like experience in Imperial, Weimar, and Nazi Germany had taught him stern lessons about the impermanence of wealth, the vanity of worldly aspirations. After visiting Palestine in 1929, he had commissioned an artist to sketch Moses gazing at the Promised Land that he would never enter. In the picture, Moses sits on an angular boulder, a thin, elongated figure with a pointed white beard, his eyes calmly lifted toward Heaven.
