In comparing their later attitudes toward Germany, Grunfeld would always stress that Siegmund had left Germany voluntarily, whereas he had fled from persecution. In spring 1934, the Gestapo arrested Grunfeld in Berlin, and held him for fifty-four hours. As they dragged him from one prison to another, his terrified wife couldn’t determine his whereabouts.
