c. 1500 Gikuyu and Mumbi and the nine clans legendary 1 cit. In Kikuyu tradition the creator Ngai set the first man, Gikuyu, on Mount Kenya and gave him a wife, Mumbi. The couple had nine daughters, and their households became the nine (often counted as ten) clans that make up the Agikuyu. Like the Mijikenda of the coast, the Pokomo tell of an ancestral homeland called Shungwaya, somewhere to the north near the Somali coast, from which they were driven south by raiders. In the tradition they fled and reached a wide red water that opened to let them pass before closing on their pursuers. In the Mbwaa story the Ngaa, ancestors of the Meru, are held under a people called the Nguo Ntune, the "red clothes" or red people, who impose a series of absurd, impossible tasks. A diviner cuts open a volunteer warrior named Aita, examines and heals him, and the reborn Aita strikes a great water so it parts, letting the fugitives cross on dry land before they disperse into the Tigania, Igembe, Imenti, Mwimbi, and Tharaka. c. 1850 Syokimau, the Kamba prophetess who foresaw the iron snake legendary 3 cit. Syokimau was a renowned Kamba seer remembered for foretelling the coming of pale strangers and a long iron snake that would cross the land, understood after the fact as the Europeans and the Uganda Railway. Whether the prophecy was spoken before the events or shaped in the retelling is impossible to establish, so it sits as tradition rather than record.
