  1. 15 February 1898 USS Maine Explosion unproven 1 cit. The battleship USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor, killing 266 sailors, and American newspapers immediately blamed a Spanish mine, helping push the United States into the Spanish-American War. Later technical investigations, including a 1976 U.S. Navy study, concluded the explosion most likely resulted from an internal coal-bunker fire igniting the ship's magazines, not external sabotage. Claims that the U.S. government itself staged the explosion as a pretext for war are a persistent but unproven conspiracy theory, not supported by the physical evidence. diplomacy / war ●●
