The Trinidadian barrister Henry Sylvester Williams convened the first Pan-African Conference, gathering delegates of African descent from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. In his address to the meeting, W. E. B. Du Bois declared that the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line.
