Denis Sassou Nguesso, an army officer, became president of the Republic of the Congo in 1979 as head of the Marxist-Leninist single party. He lost a 1992 election but returned to power in 1997 after a civil war in which his militia, backed in part by Angolan forces and reportedly by French oil interests around Elf, defeated the elected government. He has since governed for decades and changed the constitution to extend his rule, drawing charges of authoritarianism and corruption tied to the country's oil; he denies wrongdoing. His long tenure is often cited as an example of the durability of France-linked oil politics in Central Africa.
