Francois-Xavier Verschave

Francois-Xavier Verschave led the campaigning association Survie and, in books beginning with La Francafrique (1998), reframed a term once used approvingly by African leaders into an indictment of France's networks of oil, arms, secret payments, and support for friendly dictators. He argued these ties amounted to a hidden system that drained African economies and propped up repressive rulers, and he pushed for it to be treated as organised crime. His work drew lawsuits, including a libel case brought over his writing on Congo-Brazzaville leaders, in which he was largely vindicated. Critics said he sometimes overstated a unified conspiracy, but his framing shaped how the subject is discussed. He died of cancer in 2005.
