Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a son of Ibn Saud, served as foreign minister and then king from 1964. He modernized the Saudi state and its finances while keeping a firm conservative and religious grip on society. In 1973 he led the Arab oil embargo against states seen as supporting Israel in the Yom Kippur War, using Saudi oil power to send prices soaring and demonstrating the leverage of the Gulf producers. He was shot dead in 1975 by a nephew, in a killing the Saudi authorities treated as the act of an individual.
