Mubarak Al Sabah, known as Mubarak the Great, seized power in Kuwait in 1896 and steered it away from Ottoman control. In 1899 he signed a secret agreement handing Britain charge of Kuwait's foreign relations in exchange for protection, shielding the sheikhdom from Ottoman claims and setting the pattern of British influence over the Gulf. His rule is treated as the foundation of modern Kuwait and of the Al Sabah family's continuous hold on power.
