Alexander Litvinenko was an officer of the FSB, the successor to the KGB, who publicly accused his superiors of ordering crimes and later alleged that the security services were behind the 1999 apartment bombings used to justify the second Chechen war. He fled to Britain, where he was sheltered by Boris Berezovsky and kept up his accusations against the Kremlin. In 2006 he was poisoned in London with radioactive polonium and died weeks later. A British public inquiry concluded the killing was probably carried out by two Russian agents and probably approved at the top of the Russian state, which denies any role.
