Yevgeny Primakov was a Middle East expert, spymaster, and diplomat who led the Foreign Intelligence Service and then served as foreign minister, where he pressed for a multipolar world less dominated by the United States. Yeltsin named him prime minister in the wreckage of the 1998 financial default, and he is credited with stabilizing the economy and calming politics. Briefly a strong contender to succeed Yeltsin, he was outflanked by the rise of Vladimir Putin. He remained a respected elder figure in Russian public life.
