Timothy McVeigh was a decorated Gulf War veteran who grew radicalised in the anti-government militia movement, enraged by the federal sieges at Ruby Ridge and Waco. On 19 April 1995 he detonated a truck bomb outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, including 19 children, in the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in US history. He was arrested within hours, convicted, and executed by lethal injection in 2001. His attack is a central reference point in the study of homegrown right-wing extremism.
