David Lloyd George led Britain through the last years of the First World War as prime minister from 1916. At the peace, his government took League of Nations mandates over Palestine and Iraq and endorsed the Balfour Declaration promising a Jewish national home in Palestine. His premiership also covered the 1919 Amritsar massacre in India and the treaty that created the Irish Free State. The mandate borders his government helped draw still shape the Middle East.
