Democratic Party; initiated as an Entered Apprentice Freemason in 1937 but never advanced beyond the first degree.

Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and launched the Great Society, including Medicare and Medicaid. His escalation of the Vietnam War divided the country and ended his political career. He chose not to seek reelection in 1968.
