Johann Sebastian Bach spent his life as a church and court musician in the German states, ending his career as cantor at St Thomas in Leipzig. He wrote an enormous body of work, including cantatas, the keyboard preludes and fugues, and orchestral pieces such as the six Brandenburg Concertos he assembled around 1721. His music was admired in his lifetime mainly for his skill at the keyboard, and its full standing grew in the century after his death.
