Georges Méliès was a stage magician who took up film after seeing the Lumières' work. He turned the camera into a tool for illusion, using tricks, edits, painted sets, and stop-substitution to tell fantastical stories. His 1902 film A Trip to the Moon, with its image of a rocket in the eye of the moon, is one of the most famous early films. He made hundreds of films but fell into obscurity and poverty before a late revival of interest in his work.
