Elvis Presley came out of Memphis, where he first recorded for Sam Phillips at Sun Records, singing a blend of Black rhythm and blues, country, and gospel. His records and televised performances in the mid-1950s made rock and roll a mass phenomenon and made him a superstar. His success also drew lasting debate, as a white singer who reached fame partly by performing a style rooted in Black music at a time when Black artists faced far greater barriers.
