The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, formed in Liverpool and became the most influential band in popular music. Their 1964 appearances in the United States, including on the Ed Sullivan Show, set off the British Invasion, a wave of UK acts breaking into the American market. Over the 1960s they moved from pop singles to ambitious studio albums, changing what a rock record could be before splitting in 1970.
