Ravi Shankar was a master of the sitar and of the Hindustani classical tradition. Through teaching and touring, and through ties to Western musicians, he introduced Indian classical music to large new audiences in Europe and the United States. His work with the Beatles' George Harrison and his appearances at events such as the Monterey and Woodstock festivals made the sitar familiar to Western pop listeners, while he worked to keep the depth of the classical form intact.
