Walt Disney built an entertainment empire on animation, starting with Mickey Mouse and moving to feature films. His studio's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 was the first full-length animated feature, and Disneyland, opened in 1955, created the modern theme park. He was a demanding studio head whose staff struck in 1941 over pay and conditions, and he later testified as a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the Hollywood anti-communist hearings.
