Paul Joseph Ngei carried the Akamba thread into the national independence movement. He was active in KAU politics, appeared in accounts of the militant Nairobi wing, and was arrested and tried with Jomo Kenyatta, Bildad Kaggia, Fred Kubai, Kung'u Karumba, and Achieng Oneko as one of the Kapenguria Six. After release he became a major Kamba politician and a long-serving minister, making him both a freedom-struggle figure and part of the postcolonial establishment.
