Constantine reunited the Roman Empire under his sole rule and backed Christianity, ending official persecution through the Edict of Milan. He founded Constantinople as a new capital in 330, laying the ground for the later Byzantine state. He convened the First Council of Nicaea in 325 to address disputes within the church.
