Charlemagne united much of Western and Central Europe under Frankish rule and was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III in 800. His reign spurred a revival of learning and administration later called the Carolingian Renaissance. His imperial coronation is often treated as a starting point for the tradition that became the Holy Roman Empire.
