Napoleon Bonaparte rose through the French Revolutionary army to seize power in the coup of 1799 and crown himself Emperor of the French in 1804. His campaigns made France the master of much of Europe, and his legal code reshaped law across the continent. His invasion of Russia in 1812 shattered his army, and after defeat and a first exile to Elba he returned for a final hundred days before losing at Waterloo. He was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821.
