Mustafa Kemal rose as an Ottoman officer, notably at Gallipoli, then led the Turkish national movement after World War I. He founded the Republic of Turkey in 1923 and became its first president, pushing sweeping secular and modernizing reforms. The surname Ataturk, meaning father of the Turks, was granted to him in 1934.
