Nelson Mandela was a lawyer and ANC leader who helped found its armed wing after peaceful protest was met with repression. Convicted in the Rivonia Trial, he spent 27 years in prison and became the global face of the anti-apartheid struggle. Released in 1990, he negotiated the end of apartheid with F.W. de Klerk and was elected president in 1994, promoting reconciliation.
