Justinian I ordered the codification of Roman law into the Corpus Juris Civilis, which shaped later European legal traditions. His generals reconquered North Africa, Italy, and parts of Spain, and he rebuilt the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. His reign was strained by the Plague of Justinian and near-collapse during the Nika riots.
