Simon Bolivar led independence campaigns that freed present-day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia from Spanish rule. He envisioned a united Spanish America and briefly presided over Gran Colombia. His dream of unity collapsed into rival states, and he died disillusioned near the Caribbean coast.
