Clement is counted among the first popes after Peter. He is remembered for a letter to the church at Corinth, written to calm a dispute there, in which he argued for orderly church leadership and obedience. That letter is one of the earliest Christian writings we still have outside the New Testament. Later legend held that he was martyred by being tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea.
