Johann Reuchlin was the leading Christian Hebraist of his age and wrote De Verbo Mirifico and De Arte Cabalistica, the first systematic Christian studies of Kabbalah. Following Pico, he treated Hebrew letter mysticism and the divine names as keys to hidden truth. He also fought a famous public battle to defend Jewish books from being burned.
