Leo I, known as Leo the Great, strengthened the claim that the bishop of Rome held authority over the whole Church. In 452 he rode out to meet Attila the Hun near the Po River, and Attila turned back from Rome, an act that made Leo legendary. His Tome shaped the Council of Chalcedon in 451, which defined Christ as one person in two natures, human and divine. He is one of only a few popes called the Great.
