Martinez de Pasqually, whose origins are obscure, founded the Elus Coens, a Masonic order devoted to elaborate rituals meant to reconcile fallen humanity with the divine. His doctrine of reintegration held that ceremonial theurgy could restore the soul to its original state. Through his pupils, especially Saint-Martin, his teaching gave rise to the Martinist current.
