The Comte de Saint-Germain was a courtier, musician, and adventurer of unknown origin who moved through the courts of 18th-century Europe amid rumors of alchemy and secret wealth. Contemporaries recorded him as charming and secretive but firmly mortal; he is generally taken to have died in 1784. Later Theosophists, without historical basis, recast him as a deathless Master overseeing spiritual evolution.
