Henry Steel Olcott was an American lawyer and journalist who co-founded the Theosophical Society with Helena Blavatsky and became its first president. He and Blavatsky moved the society's headquarters to Adyar in India, where he took formal Buddhist vows. He is remembered in Sri Lanka for his work reviving Buddhist education and identity under colonial rule.
